I know we have film, music, literature, musicals, etc for pop culture - so does that mean any song? Should say, Happy Birthday be entered under pop-culture? What about classical — It's still popular, and was really popular once, right?

And what about food? Is food considered a pop culture item? I had no idea what a mallomar was until very recently when I actually looked it up on the internet. I, for some reason, would probably consider Cheerios to warrent an entry, as it is a brand name, but then again.. I don't know.

Any suggestions?

It's been a week since anyone edited anything or posted anything on the forum; I just wanted to say yo. Personally, I've been pretty busy at work lately and suffering from a virus last week, so I really haven't had the energy to do much here. But I hope we're not all abandoning our effort!

I was thinking that I could put my scan of the complete guide map in the stoneybrook article, but I'm not sure how to embed an image. also, is this map canon? it seems a little off. Is there another map somewhere that I don't know about?

I say it's off, because it seems as though Jessi/stacey's old house is farther away then Watson's OMG MILLIONAIRE MANSION.

I just joined. This is such a great idea!

I was thinking there needs to be an article about Ann, but I wouldn't know where to categorize it. Any ideas? I don't know how far we want to go with information about her, but she could potentially have her own category with separate articles about, for instance, her other books.

I tried to make a template for the talk pages, with the embedded comments module, along with a warning at the top to not be mean to each other. However, when I tried to use the template, it changed the page title, and now the talk page for Dawn's Family Feud is titled simply TALK, not talk: dawns family feud.

Do the talk pages link to a new page? Would it be better to add links to forum discussion?

It says there is a way to enable a link to a special forum thread just for commenting on pages. There is also some sort of module you can embed in the page so that comments and discussion appear on the page.

Just wanted to point out that we had 3 different spellings of Charlotte Johanssen. I THINK that's the right one, I looked it up last night. Two s's, one n, and E, not O. It's a stupid name, IMO.

Also, I think it's John Kishi, which makes no sense to me if he's a first generation immigrant. But the letter in SS#2 was addressed to John Kishi. I think it was SS#2. I usually ignore anything handwritten by Claudia because I can't read it. Same goes with Jessi, unless I'm in a patient mood.

We need more contributers.

I read Dawn and the Disappearing Dogs last night. There was no sitting, but plenty of Krasher action.

This past weekend I had a lot of spare time, so I went ahead and did some stuff. I hope no one gets the wrong idea — I am in no way in charge and I don't want to be taking over on someone else's project. In fact, I am quite pleased at the idea of this project - it gives me something to do, and I know it will be useful for fanfiction writing in the future.

As for book articles — what should be included? I went ahead and wrote up a full page for Dawn's Big Date (I'm reading through the series, and that's where I am. I figured I could take notes or something). In this one, I put up a short plot summary at the top, then a full recap in the middle section, a client list, and a trivia/continuity section. What I realized from doing that one page — it's a LOT of work to type out full book recaps. Not to mention the adding stuff to existing pages, creating new pages for different characters, etc.

I guess what I'm asking is for input — what sections does everyone else want to see? What do you see as the crucial BSC information that should go on book pages?

Apostrophe or not?

"Baby-Sitters Club" or "Baby-Sitter's Club"?

I believe all official sources (the scholastic website, the book covers) say it's "Baby-Sitter's Club" (and I think it's the first book where Janine comments that really, it should be "Baby-Sitters' Club"). Wikipedia uses "Baby-Sitters Club." We should really decide on one variant because, in article names, Baby-Sitter's Club and Baby-Sitters Club will go to entirely different places. Besides, it'll look neater.

I guess I would lean toward not using the apostrophe, on the basis that even the books themselves admit that it doesn't make that much sense punctuation-wise, and I think that the majority of people probably don't use the apostrophe when writing the series name. The problem (but also the bright side) is that most of us just use BSC all the time so the apostrophe is irrelevant. But on the other hand, the apostrophe IS in the official spelling.

Thoughts? Could we get away with doing a poll on the babysittersclub (again, no help!) LJ community to ask what the most common usage is? Although I'm not even sure if I could say how I most commonly write it.

Infoboxes

One thing I've been thinking about a lot are infoboxes, which are boxes that can be displayed on an article that give a quick glance at some specific information about the topic. There's one in place on Kristy's Great Idea for an example (although obviously all the info isn't correct right now), or you can check out a ton of examples on the Wikipedia site here.

I really like them, and I was thinking we could have different infobox templates for book articles, for articles about BSC members, articles about sitting charges, articles about places that are mentioned in the books, etc.

The nice thing about using a template to make the infoboxes is that when the infobox is placed on an article, the article only has to include the variable information (for example, the specific book’s title, series, number, publication date, etc.). The template’s actual formatting is saved on a different page (in this case, Bookbox). The format can be totally changed on that page, as often or as drastically as we want it to, and it will automatically be changed on every article that includes that template, without affecting the information listed for the variables. So, for example, we could change the Bookbox template from pink to blue, and it would automatically change from pink to blue on the Kristy’s Great Idea article, but the information in the infobox wouldn’t change. (And I totally expect that the formatting WILL be changed from what it is now.)

I hope I’m explaining this all right. There will be a help page that explains how to use and modify the infobox templates. But before that point, I wanted to ask if people had ideas about what information should be listed in the infoboxes, for any of them. Here’s what I can come up with right now:

Book infobox:
Currently listed: title, cover image, series (meaning original, Super Special, Mystery, etc.), number, publication date, ghostwriter.
Other ideas: significant series events (like Mary Anne and Logan breaking up or Dawn moving to CA—the big milestones), BSC events (like a pet show or the Mother’s Day trip or the Mini-Olympics)

BSC member infobox:
Ideas: Name, BSC position, span of series in which they were a member, family status (parents’ marital status, number of siblings), personality niches (bossy tomboy, Jewish comedian, shy and sensitive, California Casual, sophisticated, bookish, black ballet dancer, scholastically underachieving artist), hometown, physical appearance?

Places:
Ideas: Name, location (downtown, Washington Mall, New York), type of location (clothes store, restaurant), books in which it appeared?

Other characters:
Ideas: Name, significance of character, books in which he or she appeared (“many” if more than a few)?

Any suggestions?

Since the wiki started last week, I've spent a lot of time scouring all the info on the wikidot site figuring out how to do things, but the documentation for a lot of stuff is really mediocre. This thread is to let members know what issues I currently would like to work on, but that I haven't been able to find a solution to yet. And if you happen to know anything about them, let me know! (I'll probably be making a post in the wikidot forums eventually to ask for help but I don't want to start a new thread there for every little thing.)

Current challenges

Search box Putting a search box in the lefthand navigation panel; there's a module that allows us to do this, but by default the box itself is really big and it looks bad in my opinion. But the module's undocumented for some reason so I'm not sure yet if the size of the box can be changed.

Order of pages in the index With the addition of Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls, I realized that the PageTree module, which creates the index, doesn't allow for pages to be put in a specific order. I'm going to investigate the available options for working around this so that the books (and everything else) aren't listed randomly within their groupings.
